My family and I went to the Canada Science and Technology Museum on Sunday 3/20/22. Some of the things that I worry about when taking my family out, is cost of tickets, since there are five of us, and if everyone of each age will enjoy something about it. It isn’t easy to please an adult, a teenager, a school aged child, and a preschooler all at the same time. We were staying in Ottawa, and I found the Science and Technology Museum, and thought it looked promising for a day trip.
First Impression
Upon arrival there was no line to the ticket stand. Thankfully I purchased my tickets in advance, because they were not selling tickets at the door, they required that you purchased tickets in advanced and reserved a time slot online. We walked in, showed our ticket bar code, and were moved right along into the museum immediately. Thickets for a family were around $40. The museum was occupied, by other visiting families, but not over crowded.
Museum Experience
The exhibits were mostly about progress. There was a kitchen section, where it showed the progress of refrigerators, washing machines, irons, etc. throughout the ages. There were exhibits about the progress of snow shoes, electricity, electronic entertainment, medicine, telescopes, microscopes, & transportation. As an adult, I really enjoyed the whole thing, specifically the home wares (some brought back memories), and microscopes.
The kids really liked the interactive parts, where they got to touch things. Some of these exhibits were the crazy kitchen (on an incline, optical illusion), the train (they got to go inside a train, and see what the old and new engines looked like), and the stationary bicycle race with different types of bikes. Calvin (Teen) and Tristan (School age) both loved it, Oli (preschooler) on the other hand, was way too overstimulated. If it were just her and I, and I could have given her 100% of my attention, I think she would have handled it much better. We spent about 1 1/2 hours at the museum, and would have probably stayed a bit longer if Oli wasn't out of control. I would say 7 and up is a good age for this, or less than that if you have multiple parental units, or just 1 kid.
Pros and Cons
Pros - Exhibits are interesting, Hands on exhibits, Kid friendly
Cons - No definite direction to walk in, so traffic is not really streamlined.
Overall Activity Name Rating
In case you are not aware of my rating scale, let me elaborate, because I don’t want it to seem harsh. I rate 1-5 stars. If you ever have reviews at your job on their 1-5 scale, its kind of like that.
1 star = falls below standards
2 stars= needs improvement, falls short of expectations
3 stars = meets expectations
4 stars = exceeds expectations
5 stars = entirely another category of awesome – way above target.
So essentially 3 stars is good, rather than mediocre.
